How can I train my mind to focus : Managing a 15-brand network (S12EP17)

Context: To manage multiple brands, your focus is your most valuable asset. In this episode of the Working For Yourself podcast, I document exactly how I train my mind to focus. I share my personal 45-minute thinking system and the atmosphere hacks I use to get back into the right frame of mind for success.

Operational Tool: 45 Minute Jazz Focus Session used to concentrate on single objectives.

It can be hard to focus on what you should be doing right now. Over 18 years, I’ve learned that focus is not something you are born with: it is something you build. Below is the step by step process I use to train my work brain and get stuff done.

Phase 1: Environment & Selection
1

Create an Atmosphere

You cannot focus in a chaotic environment. I use specific “Focus Music” sessions, like the 45-minute Jazz vibes session included above, to signal to my brain that it is time to work. This helps me get into the right mindset for success immediately.

2

The Power of One

Instead of looking at a long to-do list, make your list and then pick exactly one item. Focusing on a single objective removes the mental clutter that causes procrastination.

Phase 2: The Thinking Strategy
3

45-Minute Mental Run-through

Before I start work, I spend 45 minutes simply thinking about how the task can be accomplished in my head. I write bullet point notes and do my research during this time. This mental “dry run” ensures that when I actually start working, I have a clear path forward.

4

The 1-Hour Sprint

Once the thinking is done, I commit to 1 hour of deep work on that single task. Because I have already spent time researching and planning, this hour is incredibly productive.

Phase 3: Rest & Linking
5

The 2-Hour Rest Rule

After a deep work session, I take 2 hours to rest and let my mind wander. During this time, I think about how the work I just finished can link into my other projects. This is where my best ideas come from: after the action is taken.
