SEASON 16 EPISODE 2

The Niche Test: How to Pick a Winning Channel Idea

Show Notes & Resources: Most YouTube journeys end before they begin because creators overthink the branding and under-test the topic. In this episode, Zulfiqar Ali explains his “Videos-First” philosophy.

We dive into the creation of WonderTell, exploring why niche selection isn’t about passion, but about “sustainability.” Zulf reveals his process for batch-recording 10 videos to see if a topic truly has legs before spending a single minute on logos or banners.

Director’s Note: Don’t worry about the audience for your first 10 videos. They aren’t there yet. Use that “empty room” to find your voice and perfect your hook.

The Launch Strategy

The “Don’t Mind” Niche: Pick a topic you can talk about naturally for 10 minutes without a script.
Validation via Batching: Record 8-10 videos before launching. If you get bored during this phase, the niche is wrong.
Low-Complexity Tooling: Use email drafts for bullet-point scripts to keep the “barrier to entry” low.
The 10th Video Rule: Your audience will likely find your 10th or 20th video first. Don’t stress about the quality of the first three.

Operational Logic: Step-by-Step

Choosing a niche is a mechanical process, not just an emotional one.

1. Content Before Branding

Zulf emphasizes making the videos before creating the artwork. If you can’t sustain the interest to record 8 videos, a fancy logo won’t save the channel.

2. The “Hook” Framework

A good hook addresses a current trend or question. For WonderTell, this meant:

  • Addressing the HBO leaks.
  • Asking a polarizing question (e.g., “Will they mess it up?”).
  • Teasing a specific “hidden” detail later in the video.

3. Efficient Thumbnails

Spend 7–8 minutes per thumbnail. Use simple imagery (like the flying car or a character’s face) and clear text. “Less complicated is better.”
