SEASON 11 EPISODE 10

The Small Business Tech Playbook

Are you being held back by technical friction? Setting up a new business involves a steep learning curve, especially when it comes to networks, storage, and hardware that won’t fail you in six months.

Today, I’m joined by Pixel Vid, a tech support expert with over 20 years of experience. We discuss the transition from “consumer-grade” gear to “business-class” stability, and how you can save thousands of pounds by being smart about refurbished hardware.

Director’s Note: We dive deep into the world of NAS storage, the “Frankenstein” PC method, and why your body might be interfering with your Wi-Fi connection.

Tech Foundations for Founders

Business Class vs. Consumer: Cheap all-in-one PCs are not built for 24/7 business use. Invest in refurbished “business class” machines for better longevity.
Hardwire Everything: Wi-Fi is susceptible to interference and packet loss. For large video transfers or secure transactions, use Cat6 Ethernet cables.
The 3-2-1 Backup Rule: Always have a local backup, a network backup (NAS), and an off-site backup (like a Raspberry Pi at another location).
Security via 2FA: Antivirus software can be resource-intensive. Prioritize Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and guard against social engineering/phishing.

Technical Deep Dive

The Power of Refurbished Hardware

Pixel Vid explains how older business machines (like Dell i7 towers) often feature better cooling and ports than modern “budget” laptops. This allows small businesses to scale their hardware without spending thousands on brand-new workstations.

Network Attached Storage (NAS)

Zulf shares his journey of spending £1,200 on a Synology setup, while Pixel Vid explains how “Tech Savvy” owners can build similar systems using open-source software (like FreeNAS/TrueNAS) on old desktop hardware.

Protecting the Data

From Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) that safely shut down drives during a power cut, to using Raspberry Pi devices for off-site mirrors, we discuss how to sleep soundly at night knowing your data is redundant.
